What counts as an 8-hour shift?

An 8-hour shift measures 8 hours from your start time to your end time. If your shift includes an unpaid break (like a 30-minute lunch), you will be paid for 7.5 hours. To receive 8 hours of paid time with an unpaid 30-minute break, your shift duration must be 8.5 hours (e.g., 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM).

Worked Hours = Shift Duration − Unpaid Break Time
Worked Example:

9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is an 8-hour shift. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid lunch results in 7.5 paid hours.

Is 9 to 5 an 8-Hour Shift?

Historically, the concept of the 8-hour workday arose in the early 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, popularized by Welsh social reformer Robert Owen under the slogan: "Eight hours labor, Eight hours recreation, Eight hours rest." Today, a typical 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM shift spans exactly 8 hours in total duration. However, if your employer requires a 30-minute or 60-minute unpaid lunch break, a 9-to-5 shift actually yields only 7.5 or 7.0 paid hours of work. To ensure you receive 8 full paid hours, you would commonly work a shift spanning 8.5 hours in total duration (for example, starting at 8:30 AM and ending at 5:00 PM, or 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, incorporating an unpaid 30-minute lunch break). You can calculate your start, end, and break totals with our work hours calculator or utilize the lunch break calculator.

Unpaid vs. Paid Breaks

Labor guidelines (such as the U.S. Department of Labor regulations) distinguish between short rest breaks and longer meal periods. Rest breaks of short duration (typically 5 to 20 minutes) must be counted as paid hours and cannot be deducted from an employee's timesheet. To aggregate multiple short rest periods in one day, check out our break time calculator. Bona fide meal periods (typically 30 minutes or longer) are not counted as work hours and are unpaid, provided the employee is completely relieved from duty for the purpose of eating regular meals. You can track all these shifts, breaks, and daily totals dynamically by downloading the Hours Tracker mobile app.
